Melissa Brentmore is a huge rock music fanatic. In fact, her iPod is filled with music from bands such as the Beatles, the Bee Gees, Kansas, and Bob Dylan. She has almost nothing in common with her peers, who love music from Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas, and Justin Bieber.

As great as her life appears to be, Melissa has a problematic home life. Her uncle and aunt mistreat her and her brothers Bailey and Colin. Social services intervene one night and remove the orphaned siblings from their home, eventually sending them to stay with their cousins in California.

When Melissa is enrolled in high school and joins the marching band, she quickly finds out that not everyone in her new school appreciates her musical interests, nor do they like her shutting out everyone who likes today's pop culture. Melissa will have to learn to reconcile parts of her life that she had tried to keep hidden.
